Devenish Island

Devenish Island, located in Lower Lough Erne, County Fermanagh, is rich in history and natural beauty. It is renowned for its early Christian monastic settlement, founded in the 6th century by Saint Molaise.

The island features a well-preserved round tower, standing 81 feet tall, which was historically used as a bell tower and a refuge during Viking raids.

The island also boasts ruins of medieval churches, ancient burial grounds, and high crosses, making it a significant spiritual and historical site. It was once a thriving centre of learning and pilgrimage, attracting up to 1,500 religious scholars at its peak.

Accessible by boat from Enniskillen, Devenish Island offers visitors a chance to explore its serene landscapes, climb the round tower for panoramic views, and immerse themselves in its rich heritage. It's a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty.
